Sinopse

First published in 1997, Eternal Fascism offers timely and insightful reflections on the constant threat of totalitarianism and its facets in society. Written clearly and precisely by Umberto Eco, the work presents an important and necessary reflection on the meaning of history and the importance of memory.

An invitation — a warning — to "forget"; to not consider this evil as overcome — is what Umberto Eco does in The Eternal Fascism . To remind us that " Ur-Fascism ", as the author calls it, "is still around us, sometimes in civilian clothes."

The term "fascism" is easily adaptable because it is possible to eliminate one or more aspects of a fascist regime, and it will continue to be recognized as such. Among the possible characteristics of Ur-Fascism , the "eternal fascism" of the title, are fear of difference, opposition to critical analysis, machismo, repression and control of sexuality, the exaltation of a "leader," and a constant state of threat. These characteristics cannot be combined into a single system; many contradict each other and are typical of other forms of despotism or fanaticism. But it is enough for one of them to appear for a fascist nebula to form.

First published in 1997 in the book "Five Moral Writings ," this new edition reaches readers at a time of rising worldwide flirtation with fascism—which, as Eco denounces, far from being merely a living historical moment in Italy, Europe (and Brazil) in the 20th century, is a constant threat to our society. This important and necessary reflection teaches us to think about the meaning of history and the importance of memory.

"Ur-fascism, or eternal fascism, is still all around us, sometimes in civilian clothes. It would be very comforting for us if someone appeared on the world stage and said: 'I want to reopen Auschwitz, I want the Blackshirts to parade through the Italian squares again!' Unfortunately, life is not that easy! Ur-fascism can return in more innocent guises. Our duty is to unmask it and point the finger at each of its new forms - every day, in every place in the world." - Umberto Eco
