Sinopse

Winner of the country's main literary awards, O filho eterno has a special edition with a new graphic design and a foreword by writer Sérgio Rodrigues.

In Cristovão Tezza's novel, The Eternal Son , the birth of a child with Down syndrome coincides with a turning point in the parents' lives. A desired child, but different: in the words of the father, in his timid attempt to explain to acquaintances in the first few months, a child with "a small problem." At first, everything is strange, and the father assumes that the urgent need isn't to solve the boy's problem—is there something to be solved?—but the place the child will forever occupy in the couple's life.

Tezza exposes the countless difficulties and the sweet little victories of raising a child with Down syndrome. The journey through clinics and doctors' offices at a time when the subject was less studied, still shrouded in a certain degree of mysticism, and the tense initial relationship with his wife. "In one of her crises, she tells him, in the desperation of loud tears: I ended your life." And he didn't respond, as if he agreed—the hand he reached for her hair comforted her suffering, not the truth of the facts.

With the passing of time and a series of small achievements—his first steps, going to school—little Felipe gradually comes to terms with his place as a son. His father overcomes his denial and no longer sees his firstborn's condition as some sort of "unexpected curse," seeing him as a unique individual in need of love and care. The author uses the challenges that have arisen since Felipe's birth to reshape his own story: experiencing community life as a teenager, living illegally in Germany to earn money, the struggles of a writer in his early thirties with a few books in the drawer, and the supposed stability of a professor at a public university.

The book was a huge success with both the public and critics: it won the most important Brazilian literary awards and has been translated into dozens of countries. It received the Charles Brisset Prize for best book of the year in France, and in 2011, it was one of ten finalists for the prestigious IMPAC-Dublin Award for works published in English. It was adapted for film in 2016, directed by Paulo Machline. It also received an award-winning stage adaptation in Brazil by Companhia Atores de Laura (various cities, 2011-2020), and other productions in Argentina (Buenos Aires, 2018-2019) and Portugal (various cities, 2022-2023).

Courageous and moving, The Eternal Son reinforces Cristovão Tezza's place among the greatest Brazilian writers.
