On the third day he will return... to kill.

The Redeemer is another intriguing case full of twists and turns starring Detective Harry Hole.

On Christmas Eve, the harsh Norwegian winter transforms Oslo into a desolate, inhospitable city. Besides the people rushing through the streets looking for Christmas gifts, only beggars and addicts wander aimlessly through street corners and squares in search of money and drugs. The cold, however, doesn't stop the Salvation Army from holding its traditional end-of-year benefit concert. With its charitable mission, the organization promises some hope amidst degradation.

But during the event, a shot is fired, and one of the Army personnel is killed in the crowd. Chief Inspector Harry Hole's team immediately arrives on the scene, but they have little evidence at their disposal—there is no suspect, no weapon, and no motive. Furthermore, Harry is uncertain about his future in the police force. Despite seemingly overcoming his alcohol problems, he still has to deal with his new boss, Gunnar Hagen, a staunch advocate of discipline and compliance. It won't be long before the two come into conflict.

After some investigation, Harry finds a Croatian hitman known as Mali Spasitelj , "little redeemer," for his actions during the civil war in the former Yugoslavia. Little does he know, however, that this crime may be connected to another that occurred 12 years earlier, and that perhaps, even within the charitable ranks of the Salvation Army, a twisted mind is searching for its prey. And when the killer discovers he killed the wrong man, Harry is certain that nothing will stop him from eliminating his true target and returning home.
