Sinopse
Acclaimed Latin American author Isabel Allende touched thousands of readers worldwide with the publication of Paula, the most moving, personal, and revealing of her books. In December 1991, her daughter Paula was seriously ill in a Spanish hospital. The writer followed her daughter's suffering, which lasted for months in an irreversible coma, and wrote her family's story for the unconscious young woman, hoping that one day she would awaken. Enchanted, we gain access to Isabel Allende's childhood memories, accounts of her ancestors, her youth, and her most intimate secrets. Chile and the turbulent history of the 1973 military coup, the dictatorship, and her family's exile are highlights of this unforgettable autobiography. Paula is an evocation and a hymn to life, written with the strength and courage of a woman who knew how to bounce back. The daughter of a diplomat and niece of Chilean President Salvador Allende, Isabel Allende was born in Peru in 1942. She began her career as a journalist at age 17, working for periodicals and as a collaborator with the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization, a United Nations agency) in Santiago, Chile. After General Augusto Pinochet's coup and the death of Salvador Allende in 1973, she was forced to leave her country with her family and go to Venezuela, where she worked as a reporter for the newspaper El Nacional and began writing children's stories and some plays. In 1982, she published her first novel, *The House of the Spirits*, which was initially simply a letter to her 99-year-old grandfather. Considered one of the most important figures in Latin American literature, her work is marked by family chronicles and her political stance.
