Sinopse
THE LOVE TRILOGY brings together The Sexophuro (1981), Lia's Passion (1994), and The Brazilian Lover (2003), Betty Milan's three fictional works about love. The Sexophuro focuses on a woman who, faced with the collapse of her marital life, seeks a way out outside of marriage. It originates in the drama of an impossible marriage and ends with separation and the new love that the character celebrates, the love of writing. Like the character in The Sexophuro, the one in Lia's Passion finds no solution for herself in real life. Her story is that of a woman who, to compensate for the absence of her beloved, allows herself to be carried away by fantasy, moving from one imaginary situation to another. From the first, in which she imagines herself with him, to the second, in which, dissuaded from finding him, she goes to the brothel in search of simulacra, and so on. Cut off from the rest of the world, Lia finds fulfillment through the freedom of imagination, but remains alone from the beginning to the end of the novel. In The Brazilian Lover, the woman finds a partner. Therefore, the text centers on two characters, Clara and Sébastien, who truly love each other. What they desire most is harmony. Because true love—a rare flower—is rooted in friendship, and betrayal is as foreign to it as the feeling of being betrayed. The communion, which the character in The Sexophuro never imagines and Lia only reaches in her imagination, is fully experienced by Clara and Sébastien, who are lovers and soul mates.
