Sinopse

In Heresia , Betty Milan addresses the issue of assisted death and questions the extent to which it is legitimate for science to extend life and an organic existence in which memory and subjectivity itself have already been extinguished.

Betty Milan is the author of numerous important works, including novels, essays, chronicles, and plays. Her autobiographical novel , "Heresy, " deals with her mother's death from Alzheimer's disease and the prolongation of her life due to the cultural and legal prohibition against seeking assisted dying.

At the beginning of the novel, the protagonist says: “I will attribute what I write to another narrator,” in a movement of distancing herself from what she experienced in order to better contemplate it and, thus, reconnect fiction to the impulse of knowledge erupted by the imagination.”

Manuel da Costa Pinto, in the book's blurb, writes: "This tension between reality and fiction becomes even more acute when what is represented touches on the raw nerve of ethical and emotional dilemmas—as in this novel by Betty Milan, whose character grapples with ambiguous feelings regarding the decrepitude of her centenarian mother. The heresy of the title, therefore, refers to an essentially contemporary question: to what extent is the extension of life through science legitimate, the perpetuation of an organic existence in which memory and subjectivity itself are extinguished? The novel possesses an essayistic and metaliterary dimension that has always been present in Betty Milan's work, but which has intensified since Consolação . And if The Eternal Mother addressed the theme of loss in an autofictional key, Heresia enhances it with a narrative within the narrative, in the form of a notebook in which the protagonist prepares her farewell ceremony and describes (or imagines) the stories her mother experienced before her exile in the 'imaginary palace' of immortality."

“A courageous, timely and surprisingly composed book.” - Roberto Schwarz
