A disturbing novel about immigration.

Humans have always immigrated. But the subjective history of immigration is rarely told. What are the consequences of uprooting? What does it mean to be a foreigner?

Baal is a family story. The patriarch and main character, Omar, narrates an ever-present drama: that of immigration. In the late 19th century, when his best friend is captured by a militia to serve in the enemy army, Omar is forced to leave his country in the Middle East. Fleeing the village, heartbroken, he vows to return for his family and fiancée.

He sets sail for the tropics, crosses the ocean, and begins life in the trade, like his fellow countrymen who emigrated to the New World. Using his physical strength and intelligence, he overcomes difficulties, becomes a prosperous wholesaler, and builds a palace, Baal, "a jewel of the East in the West," for his only daughter, Aixa, and her family.

But after his death, his descendants squandered his fortune. The patriarch, who died without being able to rest in peace due to family conflicts, sees the war in his home country repeated in the country of immigration.

Outraged by his grandchildren's behavior, Omar blames them for not realizing his struggle and the high cost of the golden cradle he provided them. He associates their cruelty with the shame of their origins. He says that, in addition to being xenophobic, they are forgetful, "succumbed to the dark depths of oblivion." To counter this, he recalls his own history.

Remembrance, however, forces him to acknowledge his mistakes. He failed to pass on what he learned during the crossing, and, out of prejudice against women, he failed to raise his daughter to be his successor. He used her to animate Baal , his small tropical empire, rather than ensuring that the palace would continue to exist after his death and become what it should have been: a memorial to immigration.
