Sinopse
A new cover edition of the book by Betty Milan, author of Letter to Her Son and The Eternal Mother. The Parrot and the Doctor is a novel inspired by the author's analysis with Jacques Lacan. The story is narrated by Seriema, a descendant of the "Turks" of Brazil, who went to France for analysis with the Doctor. Recalling the analysis and her immigrant past, she frees herself from the Doctor and her ancestors to become who she wants to be, cultivating her mother tongue or the language of the ão, in which she dreams. Through her irreverence, Seriema evokes Monteiro Lobato's Emília and the spineless hero of Mario de Andrade's Macunaíma. Like Emília, she speaks her mind. Like Macunaíma, she makes light of her guilt. She laughs at herself and others to free herself. However, unlike Macunaíma, she doesn't die at the end of the novel, doesn't become a star—she leaves the scene enjoying being Brazilian, mixed-race, and a woman. As French writer Michèle Sarde, biographer of Marguerite Yourcenar, says in the afterword, the story can be summarized as follows: “Seriema goes to look for her soul in the capital of the spirit and there discovers that it is in her home country and that the spirit hovers everywhere.”
