Sinopse
"

Written when Ernest Hemingway was thirty and considered the greatest American novel of all time about love in wartime, A Farewell to Arms is a semi-autobiographical novel that captures the pain of lovers struggling against the harsh and relentless realities of war. This edition features a blurb by Ênio Silveira and a translation by Monteiro Lobato.

The best American novel set during World War I, A Farewell to Arms cemented Ernest Hemingway's reputation as one of the most important fiction writers of the 20th century. A story with several similarities to the writer's biography, it introduces us to a volunteer ambulance driver wounded on the Italian front , the beautiful Scottish nurse he falls in love with, and their adventure as they search for some small sanctuary to shelter them and their love amid a world driven mad by war.

This is a love story with a happy ending, unlike the one experienced by the author. The protagonists believe they can isolate themselves in their love simply by distancing themselves from the war. In 1918, wounded in combat, Hemingway is admitted to a hospital in Milan, where he meets nurse Agnes von Kurowsky, with whom he falls in love. She, however, refuses to marry the writer, leaving him deeply disillusioned.

Narrated in the first person, A Farewell to Arms is a true triumph of literary composition, at once beautiful and tragic, tender and starkly realistic.

"" A Farewell to Arms is perhaps the best novel ever produced by an American writer. It is a magnificently perfect book. [...] A story of love and war—of a love as ardent and unhappy as that of Romeo and Juliet, of a war as inhuman and hateful as all wars.""
