Sinopse

With more than 500,000 copies sold in Brazil and awarded the Pulitzer and Nobel Prizes for Literature, Ernest Hemingway delves into the ceremonies and traditions of Spanish bullfighting, unveiling its rich history, technique and philosophy, in this Death at Dusk .

Known for his ability to capture the essence of intense experiences in his literary works, Ernest Hemingway never hid his fascination with the struggle between life and death. An inveterate admirer of human courage in the face of adversity, Hemingway explored this theme in a unique way in his writing.

He believed that, after World War I, the only place to observe the duality of life and death was in bullfights. He then went to Spain to make it a stage for his observations. His experience with bullfights provided him with an intimate knowledge and a wealth of detail that he skillfully incorporated into his works.

Death at Dusk reflects Hemingway's belief that bullfighting transcends mere sport. Presented as an art form, in which dangerous technique borders on the fine line between sport and art, bullfighting is compared to a richly choreographed ballet, in which the bull, the matador, and the spectators play active roles, contributing to the unfolding of the spectacle. Hemingway interpreted the tradition as a dance, encompassing everyone from clumsy amateurs to masters of great grace and cunning.

Furthermore, bullfighting offered Hemingway a powerful metaphor for exploring themes such as courage, mortality, and man's struggle against the greater forces of fate. In *The Sun Also Rises *, for example, he uses the bullfight as a symbol of the characters' existential struggle in the face of a changing world after World War I.

Hemingway challenges readers to confront their own notions of ethics, courage, and cultural tradition when writing about bullfighting. His vivid and emotional descriptions spark reflections on moral and existential questions.

First published in 1932 and unpublished in Brazil, Death at Dusk is also a contemplation on the nature of cowardice and bravery, sport and tragedy, and is stitched together by Hemingway's poignant commentaries on life and literature.
