Written throughout 1992, Politics and Education is composed of twelve essays. As Paulo Freire stated, the texts have "a note that runs through them all: political-pedagogical reflection. Throughout his career, Paulo Freire has received more than one hundred honorary doctorates from various national and international universities, as well as numerous awards, including the UNESCO Education for Peace Award and the Brazilian government's Order of Cultural Merit. He is a member of the International Adult and Continuing Education Hall of Fame and the Reading Hall of Fame.

Paulo Freire

Paulo Freire dedicou sua vida ao ensino, e em especial à criação e aplicação de uma metodologia pedagógica baseada no diálogo e na conscientização política. Nascido no Recife, em setembro de 1921, Freire cresceu em meio às dificuldades da depressão econômica de 1929, vendo de perto a pobreza e o analfabetismo. Sua didática procurava estimular o aluno a buscar o seu próprio caminho no aprendizado, a partir do uso de instrumentos bem familiares: seu vocabulário e a realidade à sua volta. Convicto de que o ato de ensinar é em si um ato político, defendeu incansavelmente a proposta de que o processo educacional tem o dever de formar indivíduos dotados de visão crítica e aptos a exercerem o papel de agentes transformadores na sociedade.
