Sinopse

Carlos Drummond de Andrade's debut book, Alguma poesia, returns in a new project, with an afterword by Ronaldo Fraga.

“No meio do caminho,” “Poema de sete faces,” and “Quadrilha” are among Carlos Drummond de Andrade’s best-known poems, and all are part of Alguma poesia , his debut book, published in 1930, when the poet was 28. Here, more unmistakably than in any other of his works, the influence of the 1922 Modern Art Week and, above all, of Mário de Andrade, with whom Drummond maintained a prolific literary correspondence, shines through.

Modernist ideology and aesthetics are present in the poet's approach to the world—rejecting old idealizations and immersing himself in everyday life, "like any man on Earth." They are also present in the delightful sense of humor that characterizes many of the poems collected here—"Any Little Town," "Santa Claus in Reverse," "Zero Quota," and "Ballad of Love Through the Ages" are good examples. And, finally, they are present in the confrontation of nationalism as a theme, as seen in "Europe, France, Bahia" and "Fuga," among others.

The joyful rebellion of modernity emerges accompanied by a restless lucidity, raising ethical, political, and existential questions, casting doubt on technical advancement and progress—"There are terribly complicated machines for the simplest needs," writes the poet. Amid poems marked by youth and freshness, the typical Drummondian intelligence already revealed itself, with firm lines.

The new editions of Carlos Drummond de Andrade's work feature texts edited by experts, with unprecedented access to the collection of annotated copies and manuscripts he left behind. In "Some Poetry ," the afterword is by stylist Ronaldo Fraga. Readers will also find selected bibliographies by and about Drummond; and the section titled "At the Time of Release," a chronology of the three years immediately before and after the book's first publication.

Complete bibliographies, a chronology of the poet's life and work, and variations in the process of fixing the texts are available via the QR code located on the back cover of this volume.
