Sinopse

Extremely relevant even half a century after its publication, As impurezas do branco returns in a new project, with an afterword by Bruna Lombardi.

By 1973, Drummond was already considered a classic author by many. And perhaps he himself, despite his characteristic skepticism and irony, already felt a bit that way. "Love is a privilege of the mature," wrote the poet. A verse from someone who knew his time very well, the end of a century in which even feelings of love demanded to be communicated, reported, and unraveled in words, those impurities disturbing the silent white of the paper.

Half a century after its publication, this book still resonates. And anyone who reads it today, in Brazil—"that part of me outside of me / constantly searching for me"—will certainly be surprised by its aesthetic and political relevance. In "Diamundo," Drummond sings of the "24-hour information" to which "journaledores" are allegedly exposed. And he lists some of the issues with which we were and continue to be bombarded daily: financial and real estate speculation, media sensationalism, the cult of celebrity, climate collapse, the enslavement of rural workers in the country's interior, the consequences of mining in the Amazon, the fuel crisis, the culture of pharmaceuticals, automobiles, and crime.

For Drummond, all these themes were intertwined through the arts of the god Kom Unik Assão, an increasingly deified entity, uniting and transforming everything around him. Love and heartbreak, age and memory, the "extremely dangerous journey from oneself to oneself," the longing for friends, and the profound admiration for the artists of his homeland, this "place of great misery," "little fun," and a single certainty: it is also from Drummond's poetry that emanates the pain that the poet, in some way, wanted to unite us.

The new editions of Carlos Drummond de Andrade's work feature texts edited by experts, with unprecedented access to the collection of annotated copies and manuscripts he left behind. In As impurezas do branco (The Impurities of White), readers will find an afterword by actress and poet Bruna Lombardi; selected bibliographies by and about Drummond; and the section titled "At the Time of Release," a chronology of the three years immediately before and after the book's first publication.

Complete bibliographies, a chronology of the poet's life and work, and variations in the process of fixing the texts are available via the QR code located on the back cover of this volume.
