Sinopse

Love is learned by loving is a beautiful panorama of the different ways of loving.

“The world is big and fits / in this window over the sea. / The sea is big and fits / in the bed and the mattress of love. / Love is big and fits / in the brief space of a kiss.” With verses like these, which combine sophistication and simplicity, this collection exalts the noblest “feeling in the world.”

Originally published in 1985, just two years before Drummond's death, "Amar se aprende amando" reveals the different facets of love. To speak of them, the poet always finds an unusual angle (as in the delightful neologisms "sempreamar" and "pluriamar"), which highlights his aversion to rhetoric and avoids the sentimentality that haunts poetry when it speaks of "matters of the heart." His verses do what many find impossible: they translate indescribable feelings into words.

If romantic love, preceded by overwhelming passion, is prominent in powerful poems like "Amor" and "Lira do Amor Romântico," Drummond also shows that "Old love has deep roots, / made of suffering and beauty." In the second section of the book, he expands his scope to compose masterful poems about fraternal love, most notably the moving "Companion," written for his friend Pedro Nava's 80th birthday. In the final section, the poet embodies the chronicler in verses drawn from Brazilian reality, which, at that time, was moving toward a democratic transition after the bitter "years of lead."

In Amar se aprendendo amar , the reader lives with a Drummond who is attentive to reality, lyrical and brilliant.
