The Elephant , a book-poem by Carlos Drummond de Andrade, has a new edition illustrated by Argentine artist Raquel Cané.

“I make an elephant / from my few resources,” writes the narrator in the introduction to the story of the friendly elephant, who, despite being slow and somewhat clumsy, has so much to teach us.

In this book-poem, Carlos Drummond de Andrade uses this figure, which many consider grotesque and lacking in sensitivity, to present everything missing in today's fast-paced, insensitive world. The elephant is the projection of each person's dreams and desires; it is also an animal brimming with senses and discoveries: textures, flavors, smells, and sounds; sensations, feelings—pains and joys. The allegory created by the author prepares readers, young and old alike, to understand what is at stake in life, that is, the border between reality and fantasy.

The illustrations by Argentine artist Raquel Cané also help to give shape to the elephants that exist in each of us – in addition to the one that existed in Drummond –, all different from each other, but always willing to reform this world that no longer believes in the wisdom of animals.
