"There was a shadowy emotion in that house," we read at one point in The House of Passion , a novel published in 1972 that marked an era for its treatment of female sexuality. Marta, the young protagonist, is part of the formidable gallery of powerful women that distinguishes Nélida Piñon's literature.

Living between her father's incestuous latency and the almost animalistic submission of Antônia, her foster nurse, Marta is assertive, fearless, and free from the guilt traditionally instilled by the male world. Her desire is solar, and, seeking expansion, she lives in silent struggle with the suffocating environment of her father's home. The natural environment is the space for liberating her pleasure. But great changes are announced with the arrival of Jerônimo, her father's chosen suitor, who threatens to perpetuate male dominance, with an unexpected outcome.

The novel's language is of rare beauty, at once powerful and poetic, yet always charged with sensuality. As writer and sociologist Sérgio Abranches says in the preface written especially for this new edition: "Nélida Piñon is like a literary bee, honey and sting; she weaves her text with finesse and many transgressions."

"Any man who is heir to my body I will accuse in public, I will melt him with my sweat, I will accuse him of murder, I will also see innocence in his flesh, a dangerous innocence knowing danger, I am flames, flames, but he came because the father brought him, the father knew, soon I will lose the daughter, the daughter was made to save the universe, and not alter its axis. And she brought the man, a silver stallion, dark brown, cave giant, crocodile of my flesh, serpent of my womb, and I hate him, the father thought, the daughter not making up her mind, I will decide for her."

“What strength of roots in The House of Passion , what splendor of impetuous life screaming through every word!” - Carlos Drummond de Andrade
