Sinopse

In Letters to Cristina , Paulo Freire turns to the deepest part of his being with the intention of critically and philosophically analyzing his own life, his actions, his feelings, his frustrations and sadness.

When Paulo Freire lived in exile in Geneva, he received letters from a niece asking him to tell her how he had become a famous educator. Cristina, who was beginning her university studies, wanted to connect her childhood's loving uncle with the astute philosopher who fought against the oppressive relationships that characterized society.

Her uncle had promised her some letters, which, in reality, given her busy life of travel and work at the World Council of Churches, were never written. Only more than a decade later, after 1988, now living in Brazil, did the never-forgotten promise begin to take shape in a book—this book, which would reach not only her niece but all readers interested in her affections and accomplishments.

Originally published in 1994, Letters to Cristina brings together eighteen letters from Paulo Freire to his niece and a letter from her to her uncle. It recaps his life experience and transformative practice as an educator. With his text, which is delightfully close to the reader, Freire created a book of memories and analysis of his journey as a man and a thinker in the world. The edition was organized and annotated by Ana Maria Araújo Freire. The foreword is by Adriano S. Nogueira.

"If, however, you who are reading me now ask me if I have a recipe for a solution, I will tell you that I don't, that no one does. One thing, however, I know and say because history has taught us—the history of others and our own—that the path is not that of anti-democratic closure, of regimes of exception, of sectarian, intolerant, and messianic governments, whether right-wing or left-wing. The path is the democratic struggle for the possible dream of a more just, more humane, more decent, more beautiful society—for all of this."

Em outubro desse mesmo ano, Freire deixou o Brasil para proteger a própria vida. Apenas voltou a visitar o país em 1979, com a abertura democrática.
