Sinopse

One of the greatest challenges for an artist is to convey complex ideas or emotions simply. Carlos Drummond de Andrade achieves this goal masterfully in "Contos de Aprendiz" (Apprentice Tales) .

Published in 1951, Contos de aprendiz marks Carlos Drummond de Andrade's debut in properly fictional narratives.

Born in a rural region, Drummond incorporates this experience into many of these fifteen stories, such as “The Salvation of the Soul,” in which the childhood and adolescence of five brothers are intertwined with the bucolic and naive climate of the interior of the country in the first half of the 20th century, and “The Ice Cream,” in which two boys face the dilemma of whether or not to try a previously unknown delicacy for the first time.

Gradually, the stories move toward the big cities, revealing their slow transformation. Drummond's talent for clarity and narrative elegance contributes to the psychological development of his characters. In the long, Chekhovian narrative "The Manager," the author gradually constructs (and deconstructs) the protagonist Samuel, a bank clerk who frequents the Rio de Janeiro jet set and is accused of a bizarre crime, thus being nicknamed "the Vampire of the Salons" by the newspapers. Drummond paces the revelations and lets the reader "peek" into the events, while simultaneously revealing the complexity of "ordinary people."

Another highlight of Drummond's fables is "Meu Compañero," the amusing story of Pirolito, the dog who has the "gift" of talking to his owner, the peaceful Professor Motinha. Between fantasy and realism, the writer crafts a moving narrative about friendship.

With the publication of Contos de Aprendiz – when Drummond was entering his fifth decade of life and was already a renowned author – Brazilian readers had one more reason to celebrate: our greatest poet had also revealed himself to be a great fiction writer.
