In the struggle between family duty and loyalty to one's warriors, there is no easy path to choose. Warriors of the Storm is the long-awaited ninth volume of the Saxon Chronicles , which inspired the Netflix series The Last Kingdom .

The late King Alfred's children, Edward and Æthelflaed, already dominate most of the Saxon territory. Their armies conquer and secure sovereignty wherever they go. But this doesn't stop the tireless Norsemen from constantly raiding their kingdoms.

Uhtred of Bebbanburg commands the garrison of the burh of Ceaster, a powerful fortress in northern Mercia built by the Romans. Lady Æthelflaed's power in the region expands, attracting covetous eyes. Ragnall the Cruel assembles Irish and Norse forces into the largest army ever to threaten the Saxon world. Æthelflaed's solution is to station her forces within Ceaster to resist enemy attacks.

But who will be able to keep Uhtred within the walls of a burh when his daughter, married to Sigtryggr, Ragnall's brother and enemy, is put in danger? In the dilemma between personal ambitions and political commitments, there are no simple choices.

But a man with the courage of a true warrior can walk it. That man is Uhtred, and this moment is decisive for his fate.

Warriors of the Storm chronicles a continuous series of battles, interspersed with political, social, and religious intrigue. Beyond sword and shield, there are compelling themes of political expediency, personal loyalty, and the complicated clashes between early Christians and the worshippers of pagan gods. As usual, Cornwell's research lends veracity to the book, and his interpretation of history from Uthred's perspective allows for immersion in the complex story of how such disparate kingdoms became England.

The Last Kingdom , a television series based on The Saxon Chronicles , premiered in 2015 on the BBC. The second season was co-produced by Netflix, which then began streaming the series. The series follows the adventures of protagonist Uhtred as he searches for his identity in this great war.
