The third volume of The Saxon Chronicles, Bernard Cornwell's saga that inspired the Netflix series The Last Kingdom , begins shortly after the events described in The Death Knight .

Lords of the North is a powerful story of betrayal, romance, and struggle. Set in a region of conflict and upheaval, Uhtred, a Northumbrian raised as a Viking, a man without lands, a warrior without a country, became a splendid heroic figure.

The year is 878, and Alfred's kingdom of Wessex is free of the Vikings. After fighting alongside the king in the battle that secured Wessex as England's only independent kingdom, Uhtred must return north to avenge his adoptive father's death and rescue his sister. To do so, he must face his old enemy, Kjartan, a renegade Danish chieftain who stalks him in the formidable fortress of Dunholm.

For Uhtred, hope lies in the sword. On his path, he will encounter rebellion, chaos, and fear, and will be accompanied by a Saxon nun who has left behind her religious vocation. In the name of power, the young Northumbrian will be betrayed by one of his allies, becoming a slave... and will count on the unexpected help of the one he once hated. He finally returns to the North to settle accounts and take his long-delayed revenge, finally, at the shield wall.

The Lords of the North is impressive in form. It manages to show even more cruelty and betrayal than the previous volumes in the series, not to mention an unexpected plot twist.

Cornwell's masterful touch in depicting wars and warriors hasn't left him here, and the final battle is as satisfying as it is barbaric and bloody. Uhtred's saga is dark, the path is blood-soaked and politically incorrect, but it is also uplifting, moving, and even philosophical. Fate, as we are repeatedly reminded, is inexorable.

The Last Kingdom , a television series based on The Saxon Chronicles , premiered in 2015 on the BBC. The second season was co-produced by Netflix, which then began streaming the series. The series follows the adventures of protagonist Uhtred as he searches for his identity in this great war.
