From the author of The Arthurian Chronicles , Death of Kings is the sixth volume of The Saxon Chronicles , the saga by Bernard Cornwell that inspired the Netflix series The Last Kingdom .

The beloved King Alfred lies on his deathbed. As the sovereign's days draw to a close, the Saxon nobility is restless: the heir to the throne, Prince Edward, lacks the popularity of his father, and his enemies are numerous.

This situation begins a period of tension and uncertainty in the kingdom, as well as opening the door to possible betrayals.

Uhtred, the king's right-hand man, takes it upon himself to keep the country in order while the succession issues remain unresolved. But it's not just the kingdom's treacherous enemies and the Vikings he must worry about. His increasingly intense relationship with Alfred's daughter, Aethelflaed, consumes him even more, despite the prohibition of such love. And he must be prepared, as the rivalries and intrigues for power seem to be heading for a bloody conclusion.

While contenders for the crown emerge at every turn, the Vikings, ancient adversaries of the Saxons, prepare to take advantage of the instability in Wessex and attack the rival kingdom.

But Alfred will do everything to ensure that the peace he established in his territory endures after his death. To this end, he relies on Uhtred, a Saxon warrior who has served him for years. The relationship of distrust and yet admiration established between the two has become even more complex after so many years of battles and personal disagreements.

It is the king's will that Uhtred swear fealty to his son Edward, but the warrior has other plans: to definitively expel the Viking threat from Britain. His obstinacy will lead him to confront old enemies and resurrect ancient rivalries. But every step along the way seems to hide a trap .

Due to its immense success and rich historical content, the Saxon Chronicles saga spawned the BBC television series The Last Kingdom , which premiered in 2015. The second season was co-produced by Netflix, which then began streaming the series. The series follows the adventures of protagonist Uhtred as he searches for his identity in this great war.
