Upon arriving at Adrados, Sharpe encounters the French Colonel Dubreton and his sergeant on a similar mission, to pay the ransom for Madame Dubreton. When they encounter "Marshal" Pot-au-Feu, however, Sharpe is stunned to discover that their "colonel" is none other than Obadiah Hakeswill, a bitter enemy of the English soldier since the beginning of his military career.

But rescue is only one of Sharpe's problems, for a far greater threat looms over him. Aided only by his own company and the incompetent Rocket Corps, Sharpe cannot even conceive of defeat. For any outcome short of victory would mean the end of the war for the British.
