In poems, chronicles and short stories published in newspapers and books, this illustrated edition brings together Drummond, defender of nature and animals.
In the chronicle "People, Animals," Carlos Drummond de Andrade asserts that "loving animals is a kind of dress rehearsal for loving one another." This collection of chronicles, poems, and short stories, published in newspapers and books, was organized by his grandson, Pedro Augusto, who inherited his grandfather's love of animals, from the smallest birds to the largest mammals, including our domestic companions, like the cat that gives the book its title. After all, "every animal is magical."
Born and raised in rural Minas Gerais, Drummond spent his adult life in Rio de Janeiro, never ceasing to be moved by animals. He created, with his friend Lya Cavalcanti, the annual newspaper " A Voz dos que Não Falam" (The Voice of Those Who Don't Speak) , to cover issues related to animal rights, of which he was a staunch advocate.
In the short story "Os bichos chegar" (The Animals Have Arrived), Drummond speaks of a "fraternalistic tendency" among animals—they are "friends among themselves, and friends of the human species: a stark contrast to the suspicious, even warlike, behavior of man toward his fellow man." "O gato único e outros bichos" (The Single Cat and Other Animals) recaptures the Drummondian face perhaps less familiar to young readers: that of a nature lover and animal defender.
