Sinopse

Viola de bolso , a collection of poems by Carlos Drummond de Andrade released in the 1950s, reaches its third edition, with 25 poems previously unpublished.

One of the gems marking the return of poet Carlos Drummond de Andrade to Editora José Olympio's catalog is undoubtedly the new edition of Viola de bolso (Pocket Viola ). Originally published in 1952 by the Ministry of Education and Health, the book was reprinted by Livraria José Olympio Editora in 1955, adding 56 new poems, bringing the total to 91. This third edition, released in 2022, brings together the poems from the second edition—with the addition of Drummond's handwritten revision marks—and includes new pieces, including 25 poems previously unpublished in previous editions, recently discovered by the poet's grandchildren.

These poems, which had been organized by the author himself in a folder titled "Pocket Guitar (New)," also appear in a facsimile version. For both Drummond scholars and poetry readers, it is possible to observe the changes made to certain poems from one edition to the next. These changes demonstrate the poet's concern for his writing and demonstrate how literary creation is an ongoing process, never finished.

Besides the new edition's meticulous graphic design and hardcover, it will be a very rewarding experience to read the writings Drummond brings together in Viola de bolso (Pocket Viola). The book is a kind of sentimental inventory of the poet's work, paying homage to places, affections, thoughts, and, for the most part, to people close to him: friends, artists, and important figures—among them, José Olympio himself—who won the heart of the great writer from Itabira. The dedications form a constellation that highlights Drummond's rare dexterity for crafting beautiful poetic works tied to his own life.
