In Sharpe's Eagle , the new title in the saga, the year is 1809 and Sharpe, now a lieutenant, is in Portugal. His orders are simple: incorporated into the inexperienced regiment of Sir Henry Simmerson, lieutenant colonel of the South Essex Regiment, Sharpe's battalion must march to the Spanish town of Valdelacasa and prepare to face Napoleon at Talavera, in one of the bloodiest battles of the war.

Sir Henry's men are disorganized and inexperienced, and only the cooperation of Sharpe's regiment can help them in the face of confrontation. After being defeated in a skirmish during the march, the English army's colors are taken, a sign of French triumph. Now, to restore his regiment's pride, Sharpe must steal one of the enemy's gold eagles.

Humiliated, Simmerson uses Sharpe as a scapegoat, turning nearly every soldier in the regiment against him. The lieutenant must reclaim the English king's flag to regain his dignity and, to fulfill a promise, also take with him one of the French battalion's golden eagles, a symbol of Napoleon's empire. But with the regiment's most senior officers conspiring to destroy Richard Sharpe's reputation, it will be nearly impossible to accomplish both tasks.
