The year is 1810, the British army is in Almeida, Portugal, and the war seems lost. Virtually bankrupt, everything suggests the regiments will have to march home. The two find the money, and to get it safely away, they must take Teresa, Moreno's daughter and El Católico's fiancée, hostage.

Now, Wellington's assigned mission is threatened not only by the French, but by Moreno's guerrillas and El Católico, the most dangerous man in Spain, who - especially after learning of Sharpe's involvement with Teresa - has sworn revenge on Sharpe by giving him a slow and painful death.
