Sinopse

Originally released in 1974, Tebas do meu coração has a new edition with a new cover and graphic design.

In Tebas do meu coração , Nélida Piñon interweaves dream and reality to tell the story of the inhabitants of Santíssimo, a small and modest town in the interior of Brazil where a great variety of human types are concentrated — rich and fantastic characters, whose behavior ends up breaking with logical reality.

In his speech at the Juan Rulfo Prize ceremony (Mexico, 1995), renowned writer Carlos Fuentes said: "Nélida Piñon has been an indispensable political figure in her country, serving as vice-president of the Brazilian Writers' Union during times of authoritarian repression, when writing was a persecuted task. Nélida's voice rose firmly against censorship, and simultaneously, her imagination soared with an even more powerful flight to write another great book, Tebas do Mi Corazón (Thebes of My Heart ), in which the writer identifies the struggle against dictatorship, more than against oppression, as a struggle against fatality, routine, lack of imagination, ignorance, and the uncontrollable design of things."

The result of intense literary craftsmanship—seven manuscripts were produced before the final version— Tebas do meu coração also uses Nélida's sharp wit to critique Brazilian society. A work of maturity and unquestionable artistic qualities, it's a must-read, thanks to the intelligence and talent of one of Brazil's most brilliant writers.

"On that first of July, however, Eucarístico began cutting down the trees promised to his children as an inheritance upon his death. Warned that the family was losing its most noble possessions, and through Eucarístico's hands, Magnólia went to meet him. She asked for at least three days to think. One wouldn't destroy a lifetime's worth of wealth in a few hours with an axe. Eucarístico couldn't hear a single word, and Magnólia knelt, praying for the trees while he cut them down."
