The Three Marias , a novel by Rachel de Queiroz, originally published in 1939, tells the story of three friends Maria Augusta (Guta), Maria da Glória and Maria José, from their childhood in a convent school to their adult lives.

In this coming-of-age novel, Rachel portrays the process of adjusting to the world through the eyes of the girls, inviting the reader to accompany them from the fears and uncertainties of their youth—when they still dreamed of freedom beyond the walls of their boarding school and were overwhelmed by the city—through the passing of years and their maturity and the dilemmas of adulthood. Always together, regardless of their chosen path.

Maria da Glória dedicated herself to motherhood and family, Maria José, always devoted, returned to live with her mother and became a teacher, and Maria Augusta, unlike her friends, determined to forge her own path: she returned to live with her family, but, dissatisfied, returned to Fortaleza. She worked as a typist and, there, fell in love. This is where the author allows herself to delve deeper into the social perspective and the acuity of psychological observation.

And in no way do these three Marias lose to the three stars of the constellation of Orion, which stand out aligned and shining in the sky and served as inspiration for the nicknames of the characters of Rachel: notorious and brilliant in the memory of all who know them.

Rachel de Queiroz

Rachel de Queiroz nasceu no dia 17 de novembro de 1910 em Fortaleza, Ceará. Ainda não havia completado 20 anos quando publicou uma modesta tiragem de O Quinze, seu primeiro romance. Mas tal era a força de seu talento que o livro despertou imediata atenção da crítica de todo o Brasil. Em 1931 mudou-se para o Rio de Janeiro, mas nunca deixou de passar parte de seu tempo em sua fazenda no sertão cearense. Rachel se dedicou ao jornalismo, atividade que exerceu paralelamente à sua produção editorial. Primeira escritora a integrar a Academia Brasileira de Letras (1977), Rachel de Queiroz morreu no Rio de Janeiro, aos 92 anos, em 4 de novembro de 2003. Cronista e romancista primorosa, escreveu peças teatrais e livros infantis. Da autora, a José Olympio reeditou recentemente O Quinze, João Miguel, As três Marias, Caminho de pedras, Memórias de menina,O galo de ouro, Memorial de Maria Moura, Um alpendre, uma rede, um açude e Lampião/A Beata Maria do Egito.
