Sinopse
A product of the memory and curiosity of a dedicated kitchen steward and writer of notorious talent, this brief treatise on the table of the Northeastern backlands, a digestible read, as befits the subject, rescues—in a simple text, yet of biblical solemnity, so devoid of adjectives—an unknown wilderness of the national character. Everything about it is simultaneously harsh and precise, homely and enchanting: from the revelation (insignificant only in appearance) that the mulatto servant Nise couldn't stand black people or the poor, to the description of the steely reflections of the water splashed on the plates, stinging the eyes. Between the lines of the great novelist's memories and recipes lies a fundamental life lesson: the mystery of the allure of squalor is the denunciation of the excess of superfluity that many living beings drag along without precision.
