Sinopse

João Miguel is the second novel written by Rachel de Queiroz, the first woman to win the Camões Prize.

Tristão de Athayde considered João Miguel the best of Rachel de Queiroz's four early novels. It's a prison drama. It's also a profoundly rural novel, like O Quinze . A crime and an acquittal. And between them, a betrayal, a betrayal of love. In João Miguel, the author reveals herself to be a master of creating vivid characters: a João Miguel coming to terms with his crime, a Salu, a Seu Doca, an Angélica. The work frees itself from its own author and lives on its own.

João Miguel is an ordinary man. Rachel astutely analyzes the prisoner's psychology. His wife abandons him. He finds himself alone facing the fate that haunts him. Zé Milagreiro, who is in the same prison, kills his time making ex-votos, wooden miracles commissioned by people wishing to fulfill their promises. The anguish of imprisonment, João Miguel's tension, trembles in these pages. Work rebalances the prisoner. And with his murderous hand, he composes his handiwork with carnauba fiber.

João Miguel is a novel of frustration and anguished waiting. It's a social novel with a penetrating depth of psychological analysis. Rachel recreates prison life in a small rural town. There's a mix of fatalism, chance, and social injustice in this novel, which is a novel of human loneliness and, at the same time, a denunciation and a protest.
