The story of Caetés is set in Palmeira dos Índios, the town where Graciliano lived. In this first-person narrative, we follow the journey of João Valério, an introverted and dreamy young bookkeeper who becomes involved with the wife of his boss and friend, Adrião Teixeira.

João also desires to marry Luísa Teixeira and thus advance socially. However, the book goes far beyond a love story and its twists and turns. The protagonist aspires to be recognized as an author and struggles with writer's block in his attempt to write a historical novel about the Caeté Indians.
After an unexpected event and a twist in the story, the young man rises to the position of partner in the company where he works. Feeling guilty but unable to resist the power, as if in a cycle, João Valério continues his romantic reveries.
