The only edition authorized by the Graciliano Ramos Institute, where part of the royalties go to the NGO Inoccence Brasil. This new edition of Viventes das Alagoas is based on the first and 15th editions, published by José Olympio. Published posthumously, the work is a collection of texts that blend chronicles, essays, and fiction.

The book is part of the project to reissue the entire work of Graciliano Ramos, supervised by Wander Melo Miranda, full professor of Literary Theory at the Federal University of Minas Gerais. The hybrid texts that make up Viventes das Alagoas are part of Graciliano's collaborations with the press from 1937 onwards. Considered a subversive by the Estado Novo dictatorship, old Graça was arrested in 1936 in Maceió, and transported to Rio de Janeiro, where he was only released in 1937. Settled in the city since then, the author of Caetés and Angústia began to write articles for magazines such as O Cruzeiro, Cultura Política and newspapers such as Diário de Notícias and A Tarde. The book also includes, in its final pages, reports made by Graciliano when he was mayor of Palmeira dos Índias (AL). The bureaucratic and formal language, characteristic of these documents, is replaced by ironic and sarcastic notes, as well as literary features that symbolize Graciliano's entry into literature.

Sobre o autor

Graciliano Ramos

Graciliano Ramos nasceu em 27 de outubro de 1892, na cidade de Quebrangulo, em Alagoas. Entre 1914 e 1915, então no Rio de Janeiro, trabalhou como revisor nos jornais Correio da Manhã, A Tarde e O Século. Em 1933, foi nomeado diretor da Instrução Pública de Alagoas e, ao mesmo tempo, contratado como redator do Jornal de Alagoas. Em março de 1936 foi preso, em Maceió, sem culpa formada, sob a alegação de que seria comunista, passando por várias prisões, em Maceió e Recife. Segue no porão de um navio para o Rio de Janeiro, onde fica quase um ano na cadeia. Em agosto, ainda na prisão, publica o romance Angústia. Em 30 de março de 1953, aos 61 anos, o Mestre Graça — como era carinhosamente tratado — faleceu na cidade do Rio de Janeiro.
