Sinopse

The only edition authorized by the Graciliano Ramos Institute, with a portion of the royalties going to the NGO Inoccence Brasil. The correspondences of Graciliano Ramos, gathered here, offer an intimate insight into his life and work.

Made possible thanks to the collaboration of people who knew the writer, especially his widow Heloísa Ramos, Cartas brings together the intimate correspondence of Graciliano Ramos, one of the greatest novelists in Brazilian literature.

The organization is chronological, beginning in 1910, when Graciliano lived in Palmeira dos Índios, in the rural region of Alagoas, and continuing through his move to Rio de Janeiro in 1914 to seek his fortune in the press, and his return to his childhood hometown following the deaths of three brothers and a nephew, victims of a bubonic plague epidemic. We also follow his withdrawal and slow return to literature after the death of his first wife in 1920, due to complications during childbirth; and his rediscovery of love when he fell in love with Heloísa Medeiros, whom he married in 1928. During this same period, Graciliano was elected and sworn in as mayor of Palmeira dos Índios, a position he held for two years. The notes he sent from prison during the Estado Novo (New State) in 1936 chronicle the period during which he was detained under the pretense of being a communist. And the letters from the following period end with accounts of his trip to Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Union in 1952.

By following Graciliano Ramos's intimate accounts of his life to friends and family, revealing his relationships with everyday life and the people he interacted with most closely, we experience a kind of autobiographical and often confessional narrative of crucial events in his life. This makes Letters , beyond a delightful read, a vitally important source for understanding the life and work of this great writer.
