Sinopse

The only edition authorized by the Graciliano Ramos Institute, with a portion of the royalties going to the NGO Inoccence Brasil. A political testimony of high literary quality, Memórias do Cárcere reaffirms the exceptional writing quality of one of Brazil's greatest writers.

There was only one chapter left to write in his memoirs when Graciliano Ramos died in 1953. Although unfinished, the book was published posthumously, originally in four volumes, with a "Final Explanation" by Ricardo Ramos serving as a conclusion, and soon became the author's greatest success — already renowned, but little read by the general public.

Graciliano Ramos was arrested in Maceió in March 1936 and was detained without formal charges, passing through prisons in Recife and Rio de Janeiro, until his release in January 1937, one of the most illustrious prisoners victimized by the repression of the Vargas government.

"Timid, lazy, restless, weak-willed individuals get used to prison. I, who don't like to walk, never see the landscape, spend hours fabricating small things, immersing myself in tangled webs, why shouldn't I get used to it too? It wouldn't be bad if they found some involuntary pity in my actions. It's unpleasant to play the role of victim. — Poor thing! It's degrading. Was I even certain I hadn't committed a serious offense? I had no memory, but I had furiously coveted the disgrace of capitalism, had driven pins into it, the only weapons available, had happily watched graffitied walls, had accepted Jacob's opinions. That would constitute a petty libel, which false witnesses would amplify. Did I have the right to rebel against poisonous testimonies? Absolutely not. There is nothing more precarious than justice. And if they wanted to transform my thoughts into works, they would easily find material for condemnation."
