The Land of Naked Boys is a collection of children's stories by Graciliano Ramos, written a year after his release from prison in Ilha Grande. Written in a room at a Rio de Janeiro boarding house, where he lived with his wife and children, the work received the Children's Literature Prize from the Ministry of Education.
The book tells the story of a boy named Raimundo, who is bald and has one blue eye and one black eye. Raimundo is considered strange; his neighbors don't speak to him and end up nicknamed him " Naked Raimundo ."
Without friends, Raimundo begins to talk to himself, and creates an imaginary country called Tatipirun , where people have one black eye and one blue eye, where there is no hair on their heads, and where plants and animals speak.
When Raimundo ""arrives"" in the city of Tatipirun , he comes across a car coming towards him, and thinks he's going to be run over. However, the car talks to him, and ""explains"" that in Tatipirun , no one is hurt or offended because of their behavior, no matter how strange it may seem.
Walking a little further, Raimundo comes across the Orange Tree. He tells her that the orange tree has thorns and that she feels offended, but with an apology, everything is resolved. From then on, Raimundo will meet other charming characters, such as Short Trunk and Mrs. Red Spider.
The Land of Naked Boys is an excellent choice for introducing Graciliano Ramos's work to children. With exquisite illustrations by Jean-Claude Ramos Alphen, the book will delight generations.
