The only edition authorized by the Graciliano Ramos Institute, with a portion of the royalties going to the NGO Inoccence Brasil. A classic historical chronicle by Graciliano Ramos, now in a new edition.
This Short History of the Republic was originally conceived for the contest held by Diretrizes magazine in 1939, which aimed to award a prize for a text that told the story of our Republic for children, in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of its proclamation. The text, which was not entered in the contest, would later be published in Alexandre e outros herói (Alexandre and Other Heroes ).
With the publication of Vidas secas , Graciliano Ramos had completed a cycle. The research he had been developing had reached a point difficult to overcome. Vidas secas would create a stalemate for the writer. Moving beyond that point seemed a nearly impossible undertaking. Perhaps it would be worth trying a change of course, starting over from scratch, setting aside what he had done up until that point. Opting for a field of experimentation that would perhaps allow him greater relaxation, he decided to experiment with literature for young people.
Addressing the fall of the Empire and the evolution of the so-called Old Republic, A Short History of the Republic is a kind of historical chronicle. The irreverent tone, emphasized in the first part, is very similar to that of the famous report by the mayor of Palmeira dos Índios, addressed to the state governor, which would enable publisher Augusto Frederico Schmidt to discover the writer Graciliano Ramos.
